The SuffersAs the end of the year approaches, everyone is scrambling to choose the perfect way to end the year with a bang. With plenty to choose from, one event seems to shine particularly bright. With such a killer lineup of local bands, The SuffersNew Year’s Eve Show at the House of Blues is taking it in a different direction that is sure to be not only the party that tops anything from previous years but for sure the party of the year that you won’t want to miss.

Having accomplished things from playing one of the last episodes on The David Letterman Show and winning a whopping total of 11 awards at this year’s Houston Press Music Awards for best live act, local recording, horns, drummer, keyboards and female vocals to name a few, this is one sure way The Suffers can end the year on a high point.

This is also certainly a perfect starting point for the upcoming year where they will be touring with Galactic Funk and Lake Street Drive. Not only that but they are also releasing their first full length album with a little help from their fans who funded the project via Kickstarter where they had the opportunity to donate in exchange of fun perks including the chance to be in one of their music videos, get a handwritten copy of lyrics or a personalized mixtape. Now, if by some chance you haven’t heard of them or want to know a little more, let me provide you with the basics. Since 2011, The Suffers have been capturing the hearts of Houstonians with their fun melodies and heartfelt lyrics. They are fronted by powerhouse vocalist Kam Franklin who’s soulful voice can get anyone to melt. Rounding out the rest of the band are the horn section composed of Jon Durbin, Michael Razo and Cory Wilson, guitarists Kevin Bernier and Alex Zamora, keyboardist Patrick Kelly, bassist Adam Castaneda, and percussionists Nick Zamora and Jose ‘Chapy’ Luna.

los-skarnales

The Suffers won’t be the only ones to get the crowds moving. With ska sounds and punk rock attitudes, Los Skarnales are an act you won’t want to miss. For the past 21 years, Los Skarnales have been a staple in the Houston music scene. Los Skarnales and The Suffers have more in common than just great music. For many years, members Jon Durbin, Michael Razo, Kevin Bernier and Jose ‘Chapy’ Luna were also a part of Los Skarnales up until recently when they decided to go full time with The Suffers. While there’s the inevitable mosh pit that forms during their set, there’s sure to be a place for those who want to (safely) join in and dance along to their unique rhythms.

Also adding their own individual sounds to the mix to the show are newcomers Blue Healer and Def Perception. The former being a very fun and relaxing pop mixed with a tinge of rock, Blue Healer is a band most people are going to keep an eye out for in the music scene. Def Perception is a group that has already played various awesome shows, the most recent of which happened to be this past November’s Houston Whatever Fest. Take a listen to a playlist of the lineup below:

To top it all off it’s being hosted by local favorite and major talent, Gio Chamba who’s sure the keep the atmosphere up in high spirits. To provide an additional fun twist to it all, Kiki Maroon’s Sordid Sideshow is there to marvel those who have never seen them before. So now that you’ve heard about it, what are you waiting for?
